The NHS Next Stage Review identified Nottingham City as one of the Primary Care Trusts that warranted additional GP Practices. NEMS successfully secured the bid for the Practice and purchased Forward House, located on Platform One at Nottingham Station.

Forward House is a Grade II listed structure which meant that it was necessary for Planning Permission for Change of Use, as well as Listed Building Consent.

We worked with NEMS to design the layout of the buidling and met the requirements of the NHS Planning and Guidance for Primary and Social Care Premises.



The project was challenging due to the flexibility needed, the restricted timescales and the proximity of the building to a live railway line.

We implemented a strategy to ensure adjacent occupied environments were protected from disruption, such as noise, dust and dirt, as much as possible. We ascertained that the demolition works, drilling into the structure, hammerings and fixing to steel would be the most noisy works, and as such were considered and programmed accordingly.

The practice was opened as part of the Equitable Access to Primary Medical programme, introduced in response to Lord Darzi’s review.
