PROJECT

Size: 84,455 sq ft

Value: £7.3m

Duration: 48 weeks

Project: Full design and build of new campus

Contract: JCT Design & Build

KEY DELIVERABLES

Constructed purposefully for the 2012 Olympics, the mechanical and electrical provisions were only geared for a 12 week season. The building therefore presented challenges in terms of exposed services and thermal efficiency.

We retained the existing core and shell layout across all levels, adapting and reconfiguring the services to suit the design. We also broke through existing structural floors to form the double-height space needed for two tiered lecture theatres.

Another major challenge on this project was the continually missed handover date by the main contractor which had a knock on effect on our programme of works. To maintain momentum and to ensure our own deadlines were met, we deployed sufficient and effective resources. At times, there were over 100 people working on site switching from floor to floor to keep working.

Adopting our design and build approach, together with open communication and strong team spirit we delivered a first class facility that has undergone a spectacular transformation to become the heart of a digital and creative quarter, taking advantage of the legacy of some of the most advanced digital infrastructure in Europe. This was achieved to the agreed programme and budget and exceeded original expectations.

OBJECTIVE

A strategic decision was taken by Loughborough University to establish a new London centric educational offer. They chose the legacy site of the former broadcasting centre, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (now known as Here East) as their new home for innovation.

The project involved the design and fit-out of an existing building to create an inspirational, adaptable, high quality academic space suitable for accommodating different teaching and learning preferences, including informal learning, for Sports Science and Engineering.

To act as a beacon of best practice and thought leadership throughout the education sector in terms of information and inspiration in respect of creative sustainable work environments.
